Old Skool Fridays: "Tayo'y Mga Pinoy"- Francis M.

Click on the Image for Track Download

Time pass by so fast .. and another Old Skool Fridays has come.. and another People Power (EDSA Revoultion 1) anniversary will be commemorated this coming monday...That is why even though we just recently featured Francis M. on our last Old Skool Fridays... we still decided to put him again this week with his Tayo'y Mga Pinoy track.. just to be in tune with People Power 1... This track was included on his classic and very rare 2nd album "RAP is Francis M." that was released in 1992 still under Octo Arts Records.. This album can be considered his best album ever.. it contains 10 tracks...most of them are political or conscious rap. and with DJ MOD, Jimmy Antiporda & Francis M. himself in charge of the production and arrangement of the tracks made this a powerful album...

Khen Magat Interview

Khen Magat of Serpientes is arguably the most prolific rapper in the local freestyling circuit. Not only can he deliver rhymes right off the dome, he does it incredibly fast... without getting tonguetied! Winning Andrew E's "Philippine Rap Olympics 2003" with his group Serpientes, Khen has found himself on the roster of the Philippines' largest and longest-established record distribution, "Dongalo Wreckords." Earlier last year, he was featured on Andrew E's "Clean" album. Now, four years after being discovered, Khen releases his first solo work, an E.P./Mixtape aptly titled "The Filipino Freestyler". Very humble and down to earth, and only at 19, the M.C. takes some time off to sit down with us and chat a bit. With a flow reminiscient of Gloc-9 in his prime and as catchy as Andrew E. in the golden age, the only question is if you can keep up.

SOL: So nandito kami ngayon with the "Filipino Freestyler" Khen Magat. What's good, fam? Musta ka diyan. Salamat sa oras.

Khen: Ayos lang bro.

SOL: Ayt, so eto na. First question.

SOL: Ambilis mong magflow man. Anong techniques para dun? Andaming nagsusubok since pinauso ang stilo ni Gloc-9 pero konte lang ang nakakapull off. Does it come naturally or prinaktis mo bago mo naperfect?

Practice makes perfect.

SOL: Ah ok. So, may mixtape kang nilabas. "The Filipino Freestylist." Anong maeexpect namin dun? Anong klaseng mga tracks? Hardcore ish? Love songs? Lyrical tracks?

Maganda yung kanta. Anong inspirasyon para doon? Tungkol ba sayo? Sayong mga magulang? It does seem like a really personal track.

May pre-writtens ka ba o talagang lahat on the spot?

Ung tipong gustong magbattle.

Khen: Just put your heart in to it at magpraktis lang ng magpraktis. Tulad ng lumang kasabihan pag may tiyaga may nilaga.

SOL: Wise words man. Growing up with the rap scene, sino ang mga artists na pinapakinggan mo from the local and international scene?

Khen:
Ah marami po. Sa local scene si Kuya Andrew E., Pooch, GhettoDoggs, Salbakutah, Kruzzada, Don G. Belgica, Jawtee, Damuho Squad, EHP, Romy Diaz Crew, Thug Rhyme at lahat ng Dongalo Artist. Sa international scene naman si 2pac, Eminem, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Canibus, B-real, Iron Solomon, Biggy, Bone Thugs and Twista.

SOL:
Nice picks. Malupet yung si Iron Solomon. Bihirang may makatalo dun sa freestyle battle. Hmm..

Ahhmmm ahhmm international artist? Bone Thugs and Twista.

SOL: Ah, word word. So what's next for Khen? May studio album ba na lalabas? Are you going solo from your group Serpientes or are you guys still together?

Khen:
As of now I'm doing my own thing. My mixtape is out ngayon.

SOL: Whats in store from Dongalo sa 2008? Anong mga malupet na projects ang in the works?

Khen: Marami po. Sa mga albums - yung Pentagon Album, .Andrew E. Classics (Remixx) at yung Dongalo Rap Awards Compilation. Sa mga mixtapes naman yung kay Oman B. of EHP "Walang Panget sa Mixtape," yung kay Don G "Sa Pagsara ng Pinto" at yung "Plataporma" mixtapes, sa Kruzzada yung "Kame Ang Kalye", ThugRhyme "Higanteng Munti", Romy Diaz Krew "Pwede Kaya Sa Radyo?," Madkilla of Salbakuta "Reggaton Man", Salbakuta "Wans Agen", Andrew E. "ReMixxMySh*t Vol.1," Vigilantes "Pinaka-Hate", at yung Dos Bulakenyos "Astig Pero Duwag Vol. 1".

Ngayon labas na po ang mga mixtapes na Damuho Squad "Simpleng Manyak", Jaw-Tee "Pussy", FuzBuzLow "Hawaiian Bebot", Khen Magat "Serpientes", A-Syan "HipHop Ang Hilig Ko", Andrew E. "Banyo Queen LIVE World Tour", Andrew E. "X-Mas Mixx-Tape", RP. Niggaz "Para Sa Lahat", Rabis Agenda "Batang Freestyle".

SOL: Dami ah. Parang uulan ng rap albums haha. Salamat ulet Khen! The Filipino Freestylist mixtape out now. Get a copy para malaman niyo what all the hype is about. O kaya type in Khenmagat sa Youtube to check out this freestyler in action. Any last words or shout outs?

Much love and much respect...Khen Magat of Serpientes.

Note: His Mixtape is now available you can place your orders at Dongalo Wreckords website...

Hip-Hop Unity: A Dream or Reality ?

Ever since the legendary borough battles of Queens and the Bronx with MC Shan and KRS-One, a rivalry has always existed in the ever changing landscape of Hip-Hop from dissing each other on wax like the controversial Canibus,Wyclef and LL Cool J name calling and N.W.A. vs Ice Cube (even went as far as Dr.Dre VS Eazy-E.);Hip-Hop became the battleground for MC's to settle beef or bragging rights on record. It even went as far as claiming lives of some: Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Were their deaths worth such rivalry between the Bad Boy Camp and Death Row Organization ? This Started the infamous East-West beef that went overboard, and groups like Westside Connection, Mobb Deep and Capone-N-Noreaga released songs contributing to the segregation of coastal hip-hop. From borough, coast, camp to inner-city beef (504 Boyz dissing the Hoy Boyz for Lousiana supremacy) rappers and MC's created a battlefield through lyrical trashings, such disunity for ego's sake or territorial pride sacrifices the unity of a culture, for the whims of a powerful few.
But why would Hip-Hop artists, often at the mercy of record labels, settle for notoriety by dissing others on their album. Chino XL released an album dissing rappers, politicians and people in showbiz and others as a gimmick, to enhance the metaphors he wrote for his songs. Others like 50 Cent's "How To Rob" wasn't intended to diss emcees in the lyrics, and y got stabbed at a club by one of the rappers in his song. So even as far as riding "Diss" records for gimmick-value might not be safe after all, since some take lyrics as against them very personal. What draws a line from dissing directly and using the diss as a critique? KRS-One takes his to a more general level, first by omitting certain wack rapper's name and substituting general words like "MC's with no skills" for example. Ultimately, no one is dissed, and with their own judgment should decide if the do fall under the category or not.
Sure enough, dissing is not the only harm done to hip-hop unity, but the loose foundations of many hip-hop organizations. Those bred by money, and that alone, tend to destroy each other within the organization. Bad Boy ran a loose ship to which some of their artists were forced to retire or shop for another label. Another is the serious love-hate relationship of mainstream hip-hop and the underground counterparts. The mainstream looking at the underground as penniless. Lyrical complex MC's strictly for the backpacking, cipher b-boy crowd, while the underground views the mainstream as commercial garbage, using recycled beats for profit, Such artistic differences already create a standoff and disunity in hip-hop. Instead of respecting the choices of each sound. the two try to tear each other apart and see who is the last one standing.
Hip-Hop in the P.I. is no different, many groups of MC's belonging to their respective camps fragment hip-hop unity by dissing other camps. This traces back to the tribal mentality of most of the Filipinos, going way back before Legaspi colonized the Philippines. Each group having a different sound looks down on those who are different. Like the pre-Hispanic Tribes, they waged wars based on the different headdress a tribe had, or the tattoos they were recognized for.
Many blame each other for hip-hop's slow growth in the P.I. when in fact the real issue is the "crab" mentality of the artist and their supporters. If an MC were to shit on all other MC's in the P.I. in one song, all the potential listeners already shut off their ears to those crews due to that one dissing MC.
The bottom line is effort and the maturity of artist to extend a hand of peace, instead of a diss. There is so little to lose and more to gain by maintaining a unity in the hip-hop community. especially here in the Philippines, where hip-hop is still neglected and respected by the media, record labels and others. When abandoned by the powers that be, severing ties between artist is like abandoning hip-hop for the sake of personal greed and ambition, which will only take one so far. With hip-hop in still infant stages in the P.I. it still needs all the help from everyone that believes they are part of the community. In order to develop, hip-hop must first struggle to survive against the elements bent on destroying it. With that frame of mind, only then can hip-hop unite and still stand against non-believers.

Old Skool Fridays: "Ito Ang Gusto Ko"- Francis M.

Click On The Image for "Way Of The Tongue" Track Download

For this week installment of Old Skool Fridays we got Francis M.'s "Meron Akong Ano" that was released in 1993.. under Octoarts.. In this album he introduced his band KANABIZ... who is responsible for the music on the entire album.. where live instruments is used on all of the tracks... and that makes this different from his previous albums (YO & RAP is Francis M.)... This album received commercial success with the help of Royal Tru Orange jingle "Ito Ang Gusto Ko" that was also used as TV Commercial with Francis M. on the Advertisement itself... but aside from "Ito Ang Gusto Ko" other notable tracks are Meron Akong Ano, Ayoko Sa Dilim, Nilamon ng Sistema & Ubos Biyaya makes this a classic album... Now the Question is.. when or will do labels gonna Re-Issue/Re-Master pinoyrap albums... I Hope so... Peace
