Hopie in Manila: Right at Home w/ Her Roots

"I feel very happy and blessed, to just even have the fanbase that I do have...and if this is where it ends or if this is the pinnacle of it all, then it's more than I could really ever ask for..." - Hopie

Last month, we were graced with a semi-impromptu visit from the immense Bay area-based Hip Hop force - HOPIE. Having left as a child and before any point of recollection, this trip served as her first real bonding experience with Manila. While newcomers tend to go through the standard culture shock, the petite femcee seemed to find her footing here from the moment she stepped onto Philippine soil. She was able to speak our native tongue (though she swears her "accent is f*cked up"), soak in her surroundings, and get down with the music scene for sure.

The Hip hop in Her, Cafe808 and Soulsonic TV were fortunate enough to connect with this talented lady in a 3-way collaborative coverage of her stay here. In our sit-down interview with her at Kerplunk Studio, we were able to pick her brain on her growth as a fresh artist with Diamond Dame to her true self in Raw Gems to her being"a rappin' ass person" that plans to keep putting out music. Before hitting the booth with a heavy-duty performance of "Trunk (Remix", we proceeded to cover an array of topics with Hopie about who she is down to the core, her thoughts on being a female in a male-dominated industry, her dream collaboration, etc. Most importantly, how she felt right at home with her roots.

The Hip-Hop In Her: Flava That Lasts

Hip hop veteran artists, event organizers, philanthropists...you name it. For a decade now, Jug Honeyluv and Gazelle, better known as Butta-Flava, have contributed a tumultuous amount of good will to the industry. So much so that they have often put others before them in hopes of providing support for unseen and unheard talents as well as promoting charity for the children born of hip hop families. It is this selflessness and genuine passion that has seen these two through the years and have kept them relevant to all of us. In fact, I feel that they are the Godmothers of Pinoy Hip hop,(READ MORE..)

New Track: "Finding The Way Back" -Nathan J ft. Jocelyn Oxlade

With all the beef going on right now in the hip-hop/rap scene in P.I. here's a breath of fresh air and a track that we should listen to.. This dope track is from one of the mastermind behind "The Community" events and member of the 90's hip-hop group "7 Shots" Nathan J. It's been a while since we heard a solo track from him.. So now that he's been actively releasing new tracks.. Are we expecting a solo album from him soon ? We'll never know..

The Best Ever Collabos in Pinoy Hip-Hop

*Chill and SVC

-Bagay ang chemistry nila, isang Hip-Hop group meets Hip-Hop Diva. Taken from the 2nd album album, nagkaroon din to ng konting airplay, honestly mas maganda pa cya sa mga foreign rap songs na lumabas kasabay nya. Pero dahil haters ng Opm hiphop ang mga radio stations sa pinas, di masyado nabigyan ng exposure ang collabong ito. but nevertheless, certified hip-hop classic to.

*Mastaplann with South Border "Way of the Plann"

-Marami ang nagulat ng lumabas ang track nato from the 2nd album of Mastaplann. Kumbaga "instant classic" kung tawagin.Di pa kilala ang South Border so masasabi nating malaking break din ang binigay ng MP sa South Border ng time na yun. Kabit na kabit ang falsetto ni Brix Ferraris sa mga ganja verses ni Type and Tracer. even up to now favorite pa rin cya sa parties.

*Proof Positive, DownEarf, Ill-J of SVC, Youngalaxy of PD, Pyro of 7Shots, Dash "Magnificent 7"

Denmark,Francis M.,Michael V. "Baknthaday"
This track was taken from the comeback album ni Denmark released a few years back.

Other notable collabos worth mentioning are :
"Kaligtasan" Francis M & Andrew E.
"It's on" Mista Blaze,Gloc9,Slick n Sly kane,Gobas
"Kickin Lyrics" Death Threat, MaddPoets,Chinese Mafia,Oblaxz,IPK.
"Mary jane" Death Threat featuring Janno Gibbs
"Lyrical" Genezide feat. Ali

DREAM COLLLABOS:In the future,we would like to see some more interesting collabos..How about D-Coy featuring Jay-r, or maybe another song from the super group of Mista Blaze, Gloc9, Gobas at Slick n Sly Kane. Bagsik di ba? Til my next segment, stay tuned for more commentaries on pinoy hiphop. DOnt 4get to leave comments and requests. Peace!
